Crossroads
The Crossroads Signal Director switches a signal from an instrument to two different devices. The switching action is activated by a footswitch mounted on the top of the unit and has two switching modes that can be selected on the side of the unit by a slide switch:

  • Mode 1 : This mode allows the signal to be directed to Output A or Output B and can also be represented as A or B.
  • Mode 2 : This mode allows the signal to be directed to Output A and Output B and can also be represented as A + B. The footswitch in this mode turns Output A on or off, while Output B is always active.

The two switching modes are made much more flexible and have many more advantages by the fact that Output A is transformer balanced. The transformer is manufactured from the latest high performance wideband ferrite material and is audibly transparent with a frequency response that extends to over 100KHz. It is very important to have one of the outputs balanced because in many cases when connecting several devices together in parallel a ground loop is formed causing hum and interference. Safety from electrical shocks is eliminated when connecting two amplifiers in parallel because both electrical earth connections can be left connected and not lifted to eliminate the ground loop hum as is the usual and very dangerous solution used by many players. The reason you should not in any instance lift the ground to get rid of hum is because if there is an electrical fault in the amplifier that has it's ground lifted, there is a great risk of you receiving a potentially lethal electric shock. The other advantage especially for guitar players when performing in locations where you are getting electrical shocks between the guitar and say the microphone stand is the ability to use the balanced output to effectively and safely isolate the guitar from everything. Only the balanced output should be connected in this case to provide a fully floating situation thus providing full safety.

Simple previous designs of A/B boxes that are purely passive in design do not provide any of the above safety features and suffer many problems of clicks and noise when used in many situations. The Crossroads Signal Director has been especially designed to provide electrical operating safety with professional studio quality electronics and design techniques producing a modern design evolution.

The Crossroads Signal Director is active in design using a conventional 9V battery with an operational life of over 85Hrs. It can be also used with an external DC power supply of 9- 15V. It is recommended to use a regulated power supply but extensive internal filtering will provide noise free operation with virtually all power supplies. It has a very high input impedance of over 500K and both A + B outputs have very low output impedance designed to drive long cables without any loss of high frequency or interface with other equipment designed to work at -20Dbu levels. LED Indicators show which outputs have been selected. Absolute no noise and click free switching with no bleed through of signal to the other channel are provided which is an absolute must when used in the A or B mode.

Applications: Driving 2 amplifiers in A + B or A or B modes for different amp tones. In recording applications as a direct box with balanced output to desk. On stage to provide fully floating guitar with full electrical safety. Use as a tuner buffer and mute. To direct signal to two different parallel signal processing paths.

Far from being just another passive A/B box, the Crossroads Signal Director utilizes active circuitry. The Crossroads pedal is a particularly clever signal-routing device, which provides various different ways to use pairs of amps or channels, or a tuner or effects within your setup. One of these babies in your gig bag will see you through many difficult recording and live situations.

Voodoo Vibe Jr !

The Best Vibe just got Better!

The Voodoo-Vibe Jr is our latest evolution of the Univibe unit that was used by Jimi Hendrix and Robin Trower. The Voodoo-Vibe Jr will faithfully reproduce all the old sounds and incorporates the modifications I made for Jimi. The SUPERVIBE was my 1st evolution of the Univibe and used by many leading performers including Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robin Trower .

The VOODOO-VIBE is the 2nd evolution and also has a Tremolo circuit plus the usual Chorus and Vibrato functions. The control of the sound parameters is greatly expanded and is capable of producing many new unheard effects. The VOODOO-VIBE Jr is the 3rd evolution and is the smaller brother of our famous Voodoo-Vibe, which is used by so many great guitarists such as Page and Clapton and still today remains the standard by which all other Vibe type clones are judged. It has been designed in response to the many requests of having a smaller unit with less knobs that still gives the great tone of it's bigger and more complicated brother. The Vibe Jr. has the same circuitry and sound but does not have the Tremolo function and is much easier and quicker to set up.

The Voodoo-Vibe Jr is completely analogue in operation and exhibits a very transparent and full sound quality that is lacking in digital units that simulate chorus, flanging, phasing and vibrato effects. The digital zipper noise and graininess is eliminated and the guitar tone is maintained throughout the full dynamic range, Class A discrete circuitry is used in all audio stages and results in ultra high audio quality and very low noise. The signal to noise ratio of the unit is 102Db, which is about 12 Db better than a compact disc. Extensive power supply filtering is used to ensure low noise operation from mains AC adapters.

Axis
The Axis Fuzz was developed in early 1967 to give an additional series of tone colours for Jimi. This effect is named after it's most famous use on the title track of the album "Axis Bold as Love". It can also be heard extensively on the "Band of Gypsies" and various other post 1968 recordings by Jimi. Since it's reissue it has become a firm favourite by guitarists who demand rich fill range quality fuzz tones with plenty of bottom end but that can also be used on chords and riffs. It cleans us very well from the guitar volume control and retains its large range of tone colours. The guitar does not loose identity and is truly a modern classic used by many leading performers today.

Electronically the Axis uses a discrete circuit configuration that is completely unlike the simple and crude Fuzz Face configuration. Both PNP and NPN silicon low noise transistors are used in an unique configuration that is temperature stable, free from radio interference and producing more output level and sustain than the Classic Fuzz. It produces a distinctive rich-biting sound that makes solos extremely noticeable but not thin sounding and weedy like so many popular mass marketed effects. The unit has a high input impedance to keep the guitars character and quality of tone whist providing great sustain. It is definitely best described as fuzz rather than distortion but has the ability to be used on chords as well as solos. 2 devotees.

Mongoose
The MONGOOSE FUZZ was developed in 1985 for guitarists who demand an effect with lots of fat fuzz and enough bottom end to keep a metalhead happy. The MONGOOSE FUZZ also sounds as if it has a pre-set type wah voice that gives the distortion distinctive focus. It has proved popular with a wide and varied type of guitar player from Metal through Rock and Jazz. It is more modern sounding and civilised sounding than the Axis or Classic Fuzz and has found a niche with those who want an alternative but not too radically different sound that the current range of mass produced units from the USA, Japan and Far East produce.

Electronically the Mongooose uses a combination of both discrete and IC analogue design techniques. The clipping circuit primarily comes from a passive diode circuit resulting in smooth compression and harmonic overtones providing a smooth and transparent transition from clean to overload states. Chords sound very good and with the amazing amount of sustain available, feedback is possible at the lowest amplifier volume settings. These features have made the Mongoose popular in the recording studio and similar situations where feedback is desirable at low sound levels. Current users include Bono (U2) and Joe Perry (Aerosmith).

Classic
The Classic Fuzz incorporates the same modifications that Roger personally developed for Jimi and can be heard on his early recordings.

Electronically this effect uses the Fuzz Face configuration of the classic two transistor amplifier but the low parts count and simplicity of this configuration produced many problems in the mass produced versions that were produced and available to the public. The large variations in tone quality from unit to unit, radio pickup and high frequency oscillations, temperature causing tone quality to change all made life very difficult and it was not unusual to have to select from up to 20 units to find a really good one. No two units were the same!

The version that Roger Mayer produce today has eliminated all of these problems and is representative of the best units that Jimi used. PNP Germanium transistors of the exact same type that were used in the early versions are very carefully selected for gain and stability to produce the rich smooth rounded tones that the later version NPN silicon transistors failed to emulate. These are still used by many modern manufacturers in so called vintage Fuzz Face versions. Germanium transistors do not pickup radio or oscillate and a pre-set has been added on the PC card to enable the unit to be optimised at varying temperatures. It is unquestionably the most accurate "Vintage fuzz effect" manufactured today that replicates the sound of the early Hendrix tracks. The Roger Mayer Classic Fuzz has the genuine pedigree and heritage and you can rest assured of having a device designed and built by the man who was there.

Stone Fuzz
The Roger Mayer stone fuzz is a modern evolution from the fuzz pedals Roger modified for Jimi. New features and advantages have been added for a modern sound with strong roots in the past

  • It has a modern, open sound with deep sonic heritage- a trademark of Jimi's recordings. Stone Fuzz maintains the guitar's original tone characteristics
  • Several new design innovations The STONE FUZZ is not a clone of older designs with their original faults and shortcomings but does utilize the same basic transistor configuration
  • Electronic feedforward design sets the Stone Fuzz far apart from older fuzz pedal designs. Used first in the effects chain sets the Stone Fuzz far apart from early fuzz pedal. Very responsive to each individual player's touch, style and technique. Five minutes playing with the Stone Fuzz will convince anyone this is not just a re-hashed design but genuinely innovative with some new tone colors.

Octavia
7 years running, the only exact circuit copy of the The OCTAVIA is probably our most famous and distinctive creation. This effect was designed in early 1967 and featured on "Purple Haze" and "Fire" by Jimi. It's unique tones can also be heard on such tracks as "One Rainy Wish", "Little Miss Lover", "Little Wing", "Machine Gun" etc.

The OCTAVIA produces a sound that is an octave higher than the note you are presently playing. This doubling effect is accomplished through electronic mirror imaging techniques that are program sensitive and also respond to the feedforward inputs of the player. The electronic circuitry is analogue in design and will react faithfully to all the subtleties and harmonic overtones from the guitar. The effect produced is very unique but human in quality. The unit that is manufactured today is representative of the latest evolution of Octavia that Jimi used and contains the feedforward and gating effect that my earlier evolutions lacked. The modern clones today often copy the Tchobrae unit that in fact was a rip off of my earlier 24 volt versions. These units were not designed to work optimally with 9 volts and in fact you would be buying a clone of a copy so it makes sense to buy a unit from the man who invented it.

Electronically the OCTAVIA is an analogue circuit with the properties of a frequency doubler, envelope generator and amplitude modulator with addition frequency shaping filter circuits. The effect produced is subtle to wild depending on the settings used and will respond to the attack of the player. A clean tone from the guitar with say the tone rolled control rolled off will produce "ring modulated" overtones that characterise the solo to "Who knows". The sound is tangibly different if a fuzz unit is in front of the Octavia: an upper octave double is created, clearly demonstrated in the solo to "Purple Haze". The bright harmonics are more controllable if the neck pickup is selected and the tone control set to roll off the treble. The effect really comes into it's own on the top E and B strings from the 7th fret up. A clean and precise picking style is essential with particular attention to accurate fretting techniques.

Jimi placed the Octavia after a fuzz and wah unit in most cases so it would react to the combined effects of both the wah and one or more fuzz boxes. It is important to experiment with how much signal you are driving the Octavia with as this has a great influence on the sound produced.

Voodoo Vibe
The Voodoo Vibe is our latest evolution of the famous Uni-vibe units as used by Jimi and Robin Trower. The Uni-Vibe was originally designed for electronic organs to replicate the rotary speaker effect of a Leslie unit and made by a Japanese company in the 60's. The unit's best-known user was of course Jimi who used the Uni-Vibe at Woodstock and it's' underwater sound' is identified on such tracks as 'Machine Gun'. The Supervibe was the next evolution and this rack-mounted unit and incorporated the modifications that I had developed for Jimi plus some further updates. The Supervibe's enthusiasts have included Stevie Ray Vaughan and Robin Trower. The Voodoo-Vibe goes much further in expanding the basic good filter sound of the original but with a host of new features that make the Voodoo-Vibe today's choice of player such as Page and Clapton. These new features and of course the fact that the unit includes a TREMOLO function together with the usual Chorus and Vibrato. The Voodoo-Vibe is housed in a deep rectangular die cast enclosure-is totally analogue in operation featuring none of the nasty zipper type noise and graininess associated with the digital variety of devices that simulate chorus and phasing effects. The guitar tone is maintained throughout the range of effects, which capture all the subtleties of playing technique even as the signal decays away.

Electronically the Voodoo-Vibe is totally analogue in operation with Class A discrete circuitry for all the audio stages and has a signal to noise ratio of over 120dB which is 12dB better than a compact disc. The circuitry produces warm, full, but still transparent tones and is also much less prone to background noises than the original Uni-Vibe. It also has dual low impedance outputs, which allow parallel path processing and the ability to drive long cable lengths without high frequency loss or level change. The dual outputs are also active in the Bypass mode. On the top of the box are seven controls with "chicken head" knobs. The Function control offers a choice of chorus, vibrato and tremolo. Speed is firstly set by the Range control giving three sine waves and three triangle wave speed ranges: slow, medium and fast. The precise speed being adjusted by the Fine control. Then we have the Intensity control which sets the level of effect and Output, which determines the output. Symmetry controls the ratio of the rise time to the fall time of the modulation signal being used. For example when using slower speeds you can make the sound build up slowly and cut off quickly creating a helicopter type "woof-woof-woof" sound. Bias is most effective in the chorus mode and enables the filter to be centred on different frequencies, emphasising either the bass or treble frequencies within the sweep. Also if the Intensity or amount of modulation is reduced to a minimum the Bias has the effect of providing new different phase type sounds. The Bias control when used in the Tremolo mode can make the modulation very chopped sounding and is usually accompanied with a variation of Symmetry producing some very unique tremolo effects. Speed can also be controlled from an external volume pedal that is plugged into the two jack sockets on the back. Powering is from either a single 9 Volt battery or mains adapted power supply (not included). Extensive internal filtering assures quiet and correct operation with commercial adapters. The on/off switch is a top quality rugged USA footswitch and the status LED clearly visible.

The Voodoo-Vibe has many advantages over the original without sacrificing none of the original's good points but eliminating the many short comings and lack of flexibility. The added features have received acclaim from those that have used of tested the device. It truly provides sounds and areas of experimentation that were previously unavailable so it makes sense if you are adventurous to dip into the modern aspects of analogue modulation

Voodoo Axe
The Voodoo-Axe is their latest fuzz pedal and has many of the qualities the 'Axis Fuzz' which Roger designed for Jimi in 1968. Jimi used the original Axis on the landmark recording 'Axis Bold as Love' and the Voodoo-Axe is an evolution from my original design The original Axis Fuzz is still in production today but the Voodoo-Axe offers an alternative and exciting range of new modern tone colours for those who want to experience the same basic sound qualities of the original but extend and modify the tone to suit today's music .

They have taken this great classic fuzz sound and added a very effective Fatness control which extends and tightens the low end response without becoming woolly and indistinct. The very tight and extended low end was expressly designed to compliment the use of dropped tunings and dynamically responds very well to this new range of modern sounds. The Voodoo-Axe reacts in a human way to the players touch as it uses a significant part of this information to continuously adjust it's operating point. The quality of distortion produced is very musical to the ear and responds well to the use of chords. The Guitar volume control works in perfect harmony with the unit to control the amount of distortion. The background noise is very low and encourages the use of lots of sustain without hiss and the extremely large output swing will drive the front end of any amplifier to its limit. It has the highest output level of any of my distortion or fuzz units and you can use it very effectively as a power booster.

Electronically the Voodoo-Axe shares all the same basic Voodoo Series features with dual output buffering etc.

"The Voodoo-Axe is the Axis for the 90s, with bigger gain stage and enormous amount of output" "where it really differs from Roger Mayers excellent Voodoo-One , is itīs extended Low EQ control. Dial up the "fatness" to take your fuzz way down deep - even for tunings dropped as low as C#, making it perfect for Sepultura-style heavy bass riffing." "Use your guitar volume control and the gain control to take you from Gilmour-esque rock through Stevie Ray blues and right into Sepultura scooped midgrunge." "Itīs perfect for hard rock and blues, and is blisfully free of the tinniness that you get from retro-style fuzz pedals."

Voodoo Bass
The Voodoo-Bass is so named because it adds a gustier bass equalization to the Voodoo-1 distortion sound. This enables players who favor single coil pickups to reproduce quite effortlessly the rounded, bluesy sound of classic pickups such as the Gibson P90. The comprehensive Gain and Tone variation provided by the Voodoo-Bass enable a very wide range of distortion sounds to be created from the compressed, just clipped sustain of traditional Chicago Blue to the sweet scream of full tube overload. This pedal also works very well with Bass Guitar as an increasing number of bass player are rediscovering the joys of adding both compression and distortion to their sound.

Electronically the Voodoo-Bass share all the same features but the equalization sections have been altered to provide a completely different set of tones. "

Sonically, the Voodoo-Bass is similar to that original Voodoo-1 pedal (as in Jimiīs "Voodoo Chile"), giving anything from a slight natural crunch to a smooth powerful distortion. At maximum gain it makes a medium-sized combo sound like something about four times bigger, but without the over-compressed wall of noise associated with most stomp boxes. In fact it allows for very dynamic playing; chug a chord from soft-and-damped to loud-and-ringing and the pedal goes with you - from quiet and relatively clean to over-the-edge grunge. Alternatively, simply control your overall volume ( and hence amount of distortion ) from your guitarīs volume knob. The Voodoo-Bass is designed to give a single coil pickup a gutsier tone, more like that of a classic humbucker. It definitely gets into same ball park... the low middle stays thick and constant no matter how the tone is set, and itīs this region that has the humbucker character - a really handy approximation for someone wanting a change of sound at the press of a button." " The Voodoo-Bass sounds refreshingly unboxy, and with most types of amps it does the job really professionally."

Voodoo 1
The Voodoo-1 has been designed and optimized to suit a wide range of pickups. It is the best choice for humbucking pickups and produces bright clear tone colours that will make solos stand out without sounding too thin. Using single coil pickups and 4 x 12 cabinets gives the addition body with bite that is necessary to cut through. The Voodoo-1, of course is equally happy with combos at low volume and make these small amps sound like big stacks. The distortion produced feels particularly tube like in operation and the Voodoo-1 slips into distortion with silky smoothness and compression characteristics usually only associated with vintage classic tube amplifiers The volume control of the guitar is very effective in controlling the amount of distortion and the guitar cleans up to it's original tone very easily. The Tone control is of advanced design and has been optimized to compliment various pickup types. The Gain control enables the unit to be used as a power booster without distortion up to full maxed out grunge grooviness. The Output control sets the amount of boost required.

Electronically the Voodoo-1 distortion section uses a unique combination of the best discrete and IC design techniques to emulate the type of distortion found on many classic tube amplifiers. It allows the player to create a wide range of distortion effects from mild to extreme whilst reacting to the most subtle nuances in touch and playing.

"Itīs a very effective distortion box with a gain stage that runs from the lightest crunch to one of the flappiest, dirtiest old style distortions Iīve heard for some time. Added to that is a tone control that thins or thickens the distortion with plenty of output boost for soloing levels. The distortion is very tube-like in its compressed tonality and more importantly it reacts like a good tube to guitar volume alteration." your toe!
