Frostwave Funk-A-Duck - Resonant Envelope Filter

funk.gif - 33602 Bytes

FUNK-A-DUCK?
This envelope follower control filter is not simply a guitar funk box.

Putting a signal (from guitar or whatever) into the Funk-A-Duck causes a CONTROL SIGNAL to be generated , which goes up and down as the input signal loudness contour goes up and down.

This in turn sweeps the filter frequency back and forward, like a wah. If the resonance control is set right, notes will trigger the local filter into oscillation.

For guitar, the Funk-A-Duck is normally used with the resonance set low enough so it does not oscillate. The ''Frequency Knob' sets the center of the working area. The 'input range' sets the level of the signal going to the envelope detector, while the envelope control determines the intensity and direction of the envelope filter effect. With the envelope control set half way, no control signal is developed.

This, like the rest of the Frostwave line, runs on 16VAC which is included in the price for 110V US.

Frostwave Blue Ringer - Ring Modulator

Frostwave_BlueRinger.gif - 15237 Bytes What is it?

The ring modulator uses an internal oscillator and balanced mixer to generate new harmonics that correspond to the sum and differences of the frequencies of the input signal and the local oscillator.

For example, if the input signal from a guitar or keyboard is 800 cps and the local oscillator is at 600 cps then the output will be two frequencies of 200 and 1400 cps. The level of the output signal tracks the level of the input, so the original signal is transformed into new frequencies.

The Blue Ringer has a balance control which allows the ratio of original signal and new harmonics to be varied. Thus, it is possible to have totally new harmonics or just to have a small amount of eg add a percussive edge to a keyboard sound.

By changing the local frequency - as the unit is operating - it is possible to change the generated frequencies in a unique way. This can be particularly effective with the lower notes of a drum machine.

The high/low foot control, when in the low position, enables the unit to be used as a high quality tremolo unit. In this mode, the balance control acts as a depth control and the frequency control adjusts tremolo speed.

It is best to turn up the input level as far as possible without distorting to give the best signal to noise ratio.

Power supply: use the 16v AC ***NOT DC*** plugpack supplied with the unit.

Traditionally, the ring modulator has been used with pianos, voice and brass instruments, but absolutely anything can be put through it - experiment! It would be particularly interesting to see what would happen with a bass guitar...

Frostwave Resonant Filter - Classic analog resonance in a box!

FrostwaveFilter.jpg - 16157 Bytes The Frostwave Resonant Filter is based on the famous Korg MS20 high and low pass resonant filters. Both the high and low pass filters can be made to oscillate independently, with or without an input signal present.

When getting use to the filter, it is best to start with the resonance controls at minimum (anti-clockwise) and then set the HP and LP to let through signals of interest. Note that if the HP is set at a lower frequency than the LP then there won't be much signal getting through at all. Crank up the resonance controls to accentuate particular frequencies.

Moving the resonance controls very close to resonance can produce an effect like a drum or another object being struck. As resonance is approached - the gain increases without limit at the frequency in question. With care, it is possible to extract alarming bass sub harmonics from the most unpromising material.

Absolutely any signal can be run into this filter. Harmonically rich material gives the best effects. The most naff wallybox drum machine can be transformed to a killer acid track!

You can even use the filter without any input at all. Set the HP filter to resonate at a lowish frequency (most easily done by setting it at a medium frequency and then tuning it down), then set the LP filter resonating at a high frequency and sweep the LP filter frequency with the knob. This gives an amazing didgeridoo effect at the right settings as the oscillations intermodulate. (When using both filters as oscillators do not have the frequencies close together - as they may lock together to make ONE LOUD BORING SOUND instead).

Remember, the Frostwave Resonant Filter is a musical instrument, and as such, there is scope for it to be used in many different ways.

Warning: The Frostwave Resonant Filter is based on the famous Korg MS20. Both the high and low pass filters can be made to oscillate independently, with or without an input signal present. THE OUTPUT IS VERY LOUD WHEN RESONATING (depending on the setting of the output level knob, which is directly below the unlabeled input level knob) and like any analog synth, could damage your amp, speaker, relationship with neighbors etc. Since the filters are designed to operate from subsonic to the bats & dogs region, please be careful! The Frostwave Resonant Filter analog effect unit consists of a high and a low pass filter each of which has a Q control which can be advanced to self resonance.

The design is closely modeled on the famous Korg MS20 filters. The filter box is already being used live to give severe ringing filter effects to drum loops, and in a studio setting, to add analog resonance to digital samples.

Frostwave FAT controller - True Analog 16 step Sequencer

FrostwaveFilter.jpg - 16157 Bytes WHAT IS THE FAT CONTROLLER?

The Fat Controller is a dual channel, 16 note
TRUE ANALOG SEQUENCER built for real time tweaking and ease of use.

The Main features include..

* SYNCRONIZED TO MIDI AND DIN SYNC
* NOTE QUANTIZING
* GROOVE SWING FOR FUNKY ARSE RIFFS!
* MIDI OUTPUT
* DUAL CHANNEL ANALOG OUTPUTS
* GATE TIME CONTROL
* INDEPENDENT SLIDE/TRANSPOSE/HOLD/REST FUNCTIONS
* WIDE SPEED(Tempo divide)RANGE
* FORWARD/REVERSE AND BOUNCE MODES
* SAVE AND LOAD THE SETUP

You can use the Fat Controller on its own, without midi, as a sequencer to drive *any* analog synth with gate and control voltage inputs.

You can also drive effect units having control voltage inputs,such as the Frostwave Blue Ringer or the Resonator.

Because the Fat Controller can be run at high speeds, you can...

With the quantize function on, the output is in 1/12 volt steps to match an oct/v synth such as Roland or Moog, but when unquantised you can adjust the sliders to any voltage you want, whether driving a MS20, a CS15, a Moog, a MOTM or whatever.

In stand alone mode, it is functionally similar to the classic Roland 104 sequencer.

But, there are many extra features of the Fat Controller!

It will sync to MIDI, at various multiples of the clock rate, so that you can generate a LFO that is stable with respect to the music tempo. With a filter having CV inputs (such as the Frostwave Resonator) this gives you a pattern based filter which can be tweaked manually in real time - the best of both analog and digital worlds.

In addition to putting out control voltages, a corresponding MIDI note output is provided. You can use this to drive any MIDI sound module or synth, or even a MIDI drum machine.

A particularly neat trick is using channel A to make a loop for a MIDI drum machine, and using channel B to make a control voltage to drive a Frostwave Resonator to tweak the output.

Power: 16V ac plugpack (included)
