Radial X-Amp active re-amplifier

•  Active re-amping device
•  100% Class-A signal path

• Two outputs to drive two amps
• Input level overload LED indicator
• Isolated output eliminates ground loops
• Variable output level control

The Radial X-Amp is an active re-amping device that presents the engineer / producer with a new and innovative creative tool that allows a pre-recorded track from a line level device to drive two guitar amplifiers or effect pedals simultaneously. This opens the door to explore new musical sounds and spur on the creative process.

Following the critically acclaimed Radial JD7 Injector, the X-Amp employs a unique Class-A circuit design that has been optimized for use with guitars. Using the X-Amp is easy: One would, for instance, record a dry track using a high quality direct box, then send this track from the recorder to the X-Amp and then to either guitar amps, effect pedals or combinations thereof.

Recording using the X-Amp has many benefits: Once the basic track has been recorded, replacing or adding tracks can be done well after the session player has gone home. This eliminates tiresome repetition and assures a fresh vibrant performance on the final recording. Furthermore, by driving two amps at the same time, new sounds and textures can be created allowing the engineer – producer to make artistic decisions as the recording progresses.

Features include balanced line level input with LED peak indicator and level control, Class-A circuit topology for optimal reach and frequency response, direct and isolated guitar amplifier outputs, 180º polarity reverse to bring both amps into phase, and dual ground lift options for noise-free operation.

As with all Radial products, the X-Amp is built like a tank to provide years of trouble-free performance. A welded I-beam internal skeleton provides a separate housing for maximum protection against external forces, which may cause stress on the PC board assembly while the outside bookend cover provides a protective zone for the switches, potentiometer and connectors. A full bottom no-slip pad performs double duty by keeping the X-Amp from sliding around when placed on a vibrating amplifier while also providing electrical and mechanical isolation.

A creative tool for making music!
Without a doubt, the most important question when buying a new piece of gear is: "will this assist me in the creative process of making music?'. The Radial JD•7 Injector is a creative tool that achieves this goal by allowing the guitar player to maximize the use of his equipment with 'single button' control over complex signal routing. The JD•7's simple and intuitive design opens the door to a completely new 'pallet of sounds' by allowing any number of amplifiers, effects, and modelers to be used alone or in-tandem without introducing artifacts, noise or hum.
The ultimate goal in developing the JD•7 is to present the musician, engineer and producer with a creative tool that will not get in the way of making music. With the Radial JD•7, getting 'the right sound' has never been easier!

Be prepared to be shaken and stirred!
The Radial JD•7 is a high-impedance 'unity-gain' guitar signal 'distribution amplifier' with dual selectable high-impedance inputs and 7 high-impedance outputs. Any one or all of the outputs may be selected at one time. There are separate effect loops on outputs 5 and 6 that may be inserted at the touch of a button. The JD•7 is also equipped with a balanced output and a balanced input to allow dry recording and wet remixing of guitar signals. Finally, the guitarist can also be the producer!

It all starts with great sound!
The Radial JD•7 was designed from the ground-up to sound right. We begin with a high, 1-meg Ohm input circuit impedance to emulate a classic vintage amplifier. This reduces pick-up loading while achieving maximum bandwidth. A FET driven, Class-A input circuit (no op-amps) is combined with the world's finest Jensen Transformers to distribute the original signal at unity gain to all seven outputs without artifact. Class-A circuits are the preferred choice by audiophiles due to their ability to recreate sound without artifact.
We do not believe it is our place to start changing the sound of a '57 Strat or '62 Les Paul. The JD•7 produces clean, natural sound with virtually zero harmonic, phase and inter-modulation distortion. In other words you get out exactly what you put in: nothing altered, nothing changed.

You can brag about our Drag!
Sometimes being too perfect is a problem. This is why we invented Drag control.
When a guitar is connected to an amplifier, the amplifier's input circuit reacts with the pick-up by naturally creating a load that we take for granted. This is what makes a particular amp and guitar combination sound the way it does. For instance a low-output single-coil pick-up will react differently than a high-output humbucker on the same amp. Even the length and type of cable will make a subtle difference.
The JD•7 provides a 'perfect' input for the pick-up and a 'perfect' output for the amp. Hence the problem: Since the amp no longer 'sees' the guitar, the natural 'signature' is lost unless compensated for. This is Drag control. Drag allows you to 'dial' in the exact tone of your instrument to simulate the guitar-to-amp relationship. And it is extremely musical. Once you start playing with it you may not leave it alone!

Press here for inspiration!
Plug it 'all' in and instantly, with a touch of a button, amazing new textures can be created. Never before heard amplifier and effect combination are spawned giving the professional guitar player a completely new set of tones. With 7 outputs, the JD•7 is 'surround ready' for 5.1 and 7.1 film scoring and ultra-thick layering. Now you 'can' be inside the wall of sound!
Outputs 1 and 7 (rear panel) are direct while 2 through 6 are Jensen Transformer isolated. Hum is often encountered when connecting different amplifiers together and is most noticeable when combining tube amps with solid-state equipment. Isolation transformers eliminate ground hum and buzz and Jensen's do it best! These are also equipped with ground lifts to avoid ground loops and 180º polarity reverse switches to realign drivers and for creative effects. Any or all outputs can be selected at one time.
Channels 5 and 6 also feature separate effect loops. These feature individual send and receive jacks on the rear panel and the effect loops can be switched in or out with the touch of a button. This allows 'instant' direct to amp (dry) or effect (wet) comparison.

A Balancing Act
A powerful feature on the JD•7 is the balanced input and output section on the rear panel.
The Radial JD•7 balanced XLR-M output is typically used to record the dry signal on a separate track. During playback, the track can then be sent back through the JD•7's balanced XLR-F input for remix to all of the amps and effects allowing you to find that perfect sound for track. For the 1st time, the musician becomes can also be the producer!
The XLR-M output features Jensen's finest JT-DBE transformer for cable runs to 300 feet. The XLR-F input connector features an adjustable input level control for maximum signal to noise control while the input overload is monitored with the front panel clip LED.

Built like a Tank!
The JD•7 features 14-gauge steel and welded seams throughout in a standard 19" single space enclosure with a dark enamel finish with for maximum durability and it is backed up with a full 3-year warranty. We've even added a lock to make sure the power supply cable does not get unplugged!

With the JD•7, You can have it all!
Virtually unlimited sound combinations, no added noise, distortion or artifact, and the true-to-the-source performance that has made Radial the most sought after instrument interfaces on the planet.

The JDV Mk 3 - Big Blue !

The JDV Mk 3 features a proprietary feed-foward, Class-A design coupled with and ultra-high internal rail voltage that, in many respects, looks more like a tube design than the all-dicreet components that have been employed.

Class-A circuits are preferred over more common push-pull designs (Class A-B) as they do not introduce harsh zero-cross distortion. Open the JDV and you will see Big High voltage discreet components. They are used because they simply sound better ! For example, larger capacitors are able to store more energy than smaller ones. This means that the audio signal does not starve when pushed to the limits. And every ounce has been squeezed out of the oversized componnents to yiled the very lowest harmonic distortion, virtually zero-phase distorion and almost un-measurable inter-modulation distortion.

To further enhance headroom, the JDV employs an unprecedented 30-volt internal rail voltage for excpetional dynamic signal handling. One should note that the Radial JDV is a unity gain device. This means that for whatever you put in you get out.

There are 2 instrument inputs, one mixer output, one tuner output, 2 Aux outputs, and one Amplifier output. Very verstail !

The JDI Mk3

The JDI Mk3 is a Jensen Equipped passive direct box that has been optimized to handle extreme signal levels without amplitude or phase distortion. Linear from 5Hz to 80kHz, the JDI stands alone in its ability to reproduce the natural sound, clarity and dynamics of an instrument. The world's finest high-impedance instrument transformer is used in order to retain the natural tone of the instrument and minimize loading.

The Mk3 presents a lower profile design, with a number of added features to spur on the creative process. These include a pad at the input for high gain instruments, a merge function that mixes a stereo device to mono saving valuable channels in larger live performances.

Added features with the Mk3 include a 180º phase / polarity reverse for added flexibility when combining source and mic'ed signals. Often, these two signals when combined can be out of phase which can create odd sounds when combined. This can also bring about new sounds that can work in certain instances.

To further enhance the creative, a parallel speaker input is provided for a direct feed from a guitar amplifier to access the distortion or effects that may have been introduced. When engaged, the amplifier feed also activates a low-pass filter circuit that more closely resembles the tone of a typical guitar amplifier. This ads a third dimension to the creative process whereby one can chose between the mic'ed sound, the direct un-processed sound from the instrument or the processed sound from the amplifier.

According to Peter Janis, President: "The Radial JDI is considered my many to be the finest direct box ever made. It has gained a tremendous following with users as diverse as Any Difranco, Seal, Bruce Springstein, Nine Inch Nails and many others. The Mk3 retains the tone and functionality of the original but ads many other features that we feel will inspire the musician during the recording and performance process."

The Radial JDI Mk 3 is house in a 14 gauge steel frame, and features recessed switches to reduce opportunity for damage. Connections include dual ¼" input /thru-put combination and XLR balanced output. A no-lip full bottom pad is included to allow JDI's to be stacked or placed on amplifiers to stop slipping and to prevent ground contamination through chassis to chassis contact.

The JDI Duplex

The JDI Duplex is a full function direct box that features a Jensen Equipped transformer on each channel for virtually zero-phase deviation and exceptional signal handling capacity. This is critical for wide band instruments such as keyboards that tend to get lost in the mix as they compete with bass, guitars and percussion.

The Duplex incorporates two ¼" input/thru-put jacks on each channel for typical instrument to amplifier feed through. An innovative 'merge' function on each channel allows two inputs to be mixed to mono, thus allowing two stereo sources or four mono sources to only use two channels. This can save valuable channel in large productions where mono point-source systems are employed.

According to Radial Production Manager Jim Andrews: "When we tested the Duplex against other popular direct boxes, we could not believe that the phase distortion was so far out of whack! We found one American manufacturer's box to be almost 20º out of phase while a British manufacturer's box was close to 40º out! We often hear that the JDI cleans up the signal and makes it easier to mix with. We believe that phase distortion is probably the most under-rated issue with respect to achieving uncolored sound. The Duplex is less than 4º off and less than .5 dB away from being perfectly linear from 5Hz to 80kHz."

Other features on the Duplex include 15dB input pad, polarity reverse, ground lift and speaker level input with a low pass filter circuit to emulate the sound of a typical guitar amplifier. Ideal for guitars, bass, acoustics and keyboards, the JDI Duplex may also be used to convert stereo consumer levels to balanced mic levels for long cable runs.
